familyalbum.karlsruhe: A moving memory album on stage
A family life that today appears like a photograph but unfolds with shocking clarity: In familyalbum.karlsruhe, the Young State Theater tells the story of the Jewish Fuchs family in Karlsruhe in 1934. Lisa Sommerfeldt's commissioned work combines historical research with immediate theater art and leads the audience into a time where exclusion, antisemitism, and flight shape daily life.
A family between daily life and persecution
Soni lives with her sister and parents at Kriegsstraße 120. She has friends, plays soccer, and knows the familiar spaces of her childhood. But the political reality inexorably intrudes into this family album. The Nazis have been in power for a year, and Jewish people are declared the enemy. Even Soni's father, Richard Fuchs, a respected architect and composer, finds no protection in his social status.
The production follows the path of the family from Karlsruhe to New Zealand and shows how historical violence resonates across borders. The private becomes a magnifying glass of an era: A child's life, family memories, and political history intertwine into a compelling stage action.
Historical research as living dramaturgy
Lisa Sommerfeldt developed the piece based on diary and archive entries, photographs, and conversations with relatives. This documentary foundation gives the dramaturgy a special closeness. From the transmitted traces, no distant chapter of history emerges, but a stage experience that brings concrete places, voices, and memories into the present.
Director Kevin Barz is responsible for the direction as well as the stage concept. Together with Frieder Gätjen, who is responsible for video and media technology, a production emerges where visual levels and acting artistry intertwine. Costumes by Gloria Müller, music by Paul Brody, and the dramaturgical work of Anna-Teresa Schmidt create a theater atmosphere between familial warmth and growing threat.
Light, sound, and traces of memory
The set opens a memory space where the past feels present rather than museum-like. Photographic images, media projections, and musical accents add an additional depth to the action. The acoustics become an emotional resonance space: Familiar everyday moments are juxtaposed with the sounds of bomb alerts and explosions.
The production is aimed at people aged twelve and older and meets its audience with great seriousness. It addresses antisemitism, flight, and psychological violence without simplifying historical contexts. This connection of professional research, sensual stage art, and clear perspective makes the theater evening particularly impressive for families, school classes, and culture-interested youth.
A commissioned work with social responsibility
familyalbum.karlsruhe is a collaboration with the Digital Theater. The production is funded from project funds for children's and youth theater by the Ministry of Science, Research, and Art of Baden-Württemberg. The performance rights are held by S. Fischer Verlag.
The Baden State Theater makes visible through this work how memory culture remains alive on stage. The story of the Fuchs family connects Karlsruhe's local history with a universal question: How do people preserve their dignity when their home and security are taken away?
Conclusion: History becomes an immediate stage experience
The audience can expect a concentrated, visually strong, and historically grounded production about family, flight, and the power of remembrance. familyalbum.karlsruhe invites one to not just observe history but to experience it in the shared theater space. Those looking for the connection of documentary theater, acting art, and contemporary historical education will find an evening of lasting impact at the INSEL.
