Stella Nova: A cosmic journey to our origin
Under the dome of the PLANET KA Planetarium Karlsruhe, the starry sky transforms into a grand stage: Stella Nova takes adults and children from about ten years old on an impressive journey through the birth, life, and death of stars. At its core lies one of humanity's oldest questions: Where do we come from?
When stars die and new life emerges
The production combines astronomical education with the visual power of fulldome theater. It tells of white dwarfs, novae, and supernovae – of massive cosmic processes that extinguish stars and simultaneously create the building blocks for new worlds. From the death of stars, new life arises: Our own existence is also woven into this cosmic drama.
A stage set of light, space, and time
The planetarium becomes an immersive stage set, where the view opens from the familiar night sky to the depths of space. Light moods, spherical projections, and the acoustics of the dome create a stage experience that makes scientific knowledge sensually tangible. The direction follows a clear dramaturgy: from the star as a fascinating celestial body to the existential question of our origin.
Science as an urgent narrative
Stella Nova was created as a planetarium production from Lucerne and Freiburg and is aimed at a broad audience. The event explains what a star is, how it functions, and how its life cycle ends. Technical terms like nova, supernova, and star formation are embedded in an understandable narrative that sparks curiosity and encourages further thought.
The stage experience for families and cosmos enthusiasts
With a duration of about 60 minutes, the performance is suitable for families with children aged around ten as well as for adults who want to experience the cosmos from a new perspective. The concentrated theater atmosphere of the planetarium allows everyday life to be left behind for an hour, opening the gaze to the vast scales of the universe.
