Cinderella in Karlsruhe: A Fairytale Ballet about the Liberating Power of Encounter
When the curtain rises on October 31, 2026, in the Grand House of the Badisches Staatstheater, a fairytale world begins between darkness, magic, and hope. With Cinderella, house choreographer Kristina Paulin presents her first full-length creation for the Badisches Staatsballett – a world premiere that tells the familiar story from an empathetic, newly invigorated perspective.
Two Homeless Souls Find Each Other
At the center of the staging are Cinderella and the Prince. Both live in places that offer them no home: Cinderella is subjected to humiliations and hard work in her own home, while the Prince threatens to suffocate on rules and expectations in the palace. Their encounter unfolds a special dramatic tension. It is not only fairy-tale-like but also liberating.
Paulin preserves the familiar traces of the versions by Charles Perrault and the Brothers Grimm but sets them against a contemporary perspective. The fairytale ballet tells of exclusion, classism, inner alienation, and the courage to break free from predetermined roles.
Opulent Set Design, Precious Costumes, and Prokofiev's Music
The stage art receives an opulent, transformable form through the stage design by Sebastian Hannak. Bregje van Balens' costumes give the characters a striking visual identity and make the contrast between oppressive everyday life, courtly order, and magical transformations visible.
Sergei Prokofiev's music leads through the changing emotional landscapes of the story: melancholic passages meet with dancing lightness, dramatic tonal colors with the sparkling atmosphere of the ball. The Badische Staatskapelle accompanies the performance live and lends the stage experience immediate acoustic depth.
A Ballet Evening for the Whole Family
The production is aimed at visitors aged eight and above and combines classic fairytale elements with modern narrative art. Ensemble dances, characterful figures, and the emotional development of the two main characters form a colorful narrative ballet. Blinking and flickering light effects, fog, and background music are part of the announced sensory impressions.
The performance lasts about two and a half hours and includes a break. An introduction begins at 6:30 PM, offering insights into dramaturgy, choreography, and musical design. Following the premiere, the Badisches Staatstheater invites guests to the premiere celebration in the New Entrance.
Conclusion: Fairytale Magic with Contemporary Clarity
Cinderella promises an intense stage experience between classical ballet, modern choreography, and a grand theater atmosphere. Kristina Paulin not only places the fairy-tale transformation in the spotlight but also the human longing for belonging. Those who want to experience how dance, music, light, and set design bring a familiar material to new life will find in this premiere a special evening for the whole family.
