A magical children’s opera about friendship and imagination
When a tiny visitor suddenly appears in the children's room, an extraordinary family experience begins for Bertil: On Friday, November 6, 2026, the Young State Theatre Karlsruhe will tell a loving story about loneliness, friendship, and the power of imagination with Nils Karlsson Däumling.
A small friend with a big impact
Bertil is often alone while his parents work. Then he meets Nisse, a boy the size of a thumb, who lives in a mouse hole in the basement. A special friendship develops between them, changing Bertil's daily life and opening new perspectives.
Music makes the world feel vast
A singer and a violinist take children and adults into a fanciful sound world. Music, movement, and a special magic spell help Bertil and Nisse overcome seemingly insurmountable obstacles. The production combines children's opera, drama, and a picturesque storytelling style for a concentrated learning experience for young audiences.
Child-friendly, age-appropriate, and full of fun learning
The performance is recommended for children aged 3 and up and lasts about 40 minutes. The format addresses important themes of child development: friendship, feelings, courage, independence, and dealing with loneliness. The narrative remains easily accessible, warm-hearted, and full of children's laughter, wonder, and curiosity.
Quality time at the theater
The intimate venue Insel provides a fitting framework for a close family experience. Big and small experience together how imagination overcomes boundaries and turns a small adventure into a big story. The Young State Theatre also offers suitable options for daycare centers and groups; the production is available for groups from 75 people.
Conclusion: A loving theater visit for the whole family
Nils Karlsson Däumling invites families to share time together, musical magic, and a child-friendly story about friendship. Those who wish to gently introduce young children to opera and theater will find a fanciful and age-appropriate family program at the Insel Theater Karlsruhe.
