When the Karlsburg Barracks Was: Experience Durlach's Military History Up Close

On Sunday, October 25, 2026, the special exhibition at the Pfinzgaumuseum Karlsburg Durlach will conclude with a free finissage. At 3 PM, Eva Unterburg will guide through the presentation and provide a vivid access to a significant chapter of Durlach's city history: the stationing of the Baden Train Battalion No. 14 in the Karlsburg.

A Baroque Residence Becomes a Garrison

When the Baden Train Battalion No. 14 moved to Durlach in 1894, the former residence of the Margraves of Baden-Durlach took on a new function. The Karlsburg became the main garrison, while soldiers in dark blue uniforms shaped the cityscape and daily life of the population until the end of World War I. The exhibition connects military history with city history and makes visible how closely the army, society, and local daily life were intertwined.

Uniforms, Pickelhaube, and Personal Memories

Historical photographs and plans locate the former facilities of the Train Battalion in the urban landscape. Uniforms, pickelhaube, and sabers illustrate the tasks, training, and equipment of the soldiers. Personal mementos such as reserve soldier mugs and photo portraits have a particularly poignant effect. They tell stories of pride in one's unit, of lived memorial culture, and of the individual experiences behind the military structures.

The Train as a Supply Unit

The term Train refers to the logistical role of the unit. The focus was on the supply and transport of troops, not immediate frontline deployment. The exhibition places this function in the context of the military history of the Empire and simultaneously shows how the perception of military service changed through the experiences of World War I. Individual soldier fates, the societal influence of the garrison, and the end of Durlach as a military site complement the historical perspective.

Finissage with Eva Unterburg

The free guided tour deepens the exhibition with exciting insights into the tasks and training of the Train soldiers, into the military-utilized buildings of the Karlsburg, and into the personal testimonies from past service times. No registration is required. The last exhibition day thus offers a concentrated examination of historical objects and an inspiring aesthetic experience in the authentic ambiance of the baroque Karlsburg.

Admission and Visit

On October 25, visiting the special exhibition as well as the tour at 3 PM is free. The Pfinzgaumuseum is open on Sundays from 11 AM to 6 PM. The exhibition was created from the holdings of the Pfinzgaumuseum, the Military History Museum Rastatt, and the Widmann Collection.

Conclusion: Discover History in the Original One Last Time

The finissage combines cultural-historical education, illustrative object presentation, and a personal tour into a special art experience at the museum. Anyone wishing to directly experience Durlach's past, the history of the Karlsburg, and the memory culture of the Baden Train Battalion No. 14 should definitely take this last opportunity for the exhibition and the free tour.
