When Science Becomes a Game Board

How can complex topics from research, ecology, and energy be conveyed playfully? The event Science Gaming – Science and Board Games invites you to discover modern board games as creative tools for education and science communication at offerta 2026.

Playful Research, Discovery, and Discussion

In the Reading Forum of the Messe Karlsruhe, the role-playing and board game club Thoule 1987 e.V. and the Science Gaming project of the University of Bonn will present selected games. The focus will be on commercially available titles that translate scientific questions into rules, decisions, and collective gaming experiences.

Among others, Wingspan, Catan: Energien, and e-Mission will be mentioned. The games provide different approaches to nature, energy, sustainability, and social responsibility. Science does not appear as abstract textbook knowledge, but as an aesthetic and social experience at the game table.

From Moves to Science Communication

Board games structure knowledge about materials, scenarios, and action possibilities. Each decision generates immediate consequences, makes connections visible, and encourages exchange. This is precisely the strength of Science Gaming: Participants experience how rules model complex systems and how playing together allows for shifts in perspective.

The examination of the work is not focused on painting, sculpture, or installation but on the board game as a cultural medium. Design, dramaturgy, symbolism, and materiality combine into an interactive form of knowledge transfer. The event connects cultural education, game design, and scientific communication in an open exhibition atmosphere.

Try It Instead of Just Watching

After the game presentations, hands-on experimentation is the focus. Visitors can learn about game mechanics, play rounds together, and exchange ideas about the scientific topics behind the titles. This creates an easily accessible approach for game enthusiasts, families, educationally interested individuals, and anyone who wants to experience science from an unusual perspective.

An Artistic Experience of Thinking and Acting

Science Gaming expands the view on exhibiting: Not only the finished object matters, but also the action it triggers. Aesthetic experience arises from colors, illustrations, cards, figures, game boards, and the dynamics of collective decisions. The result is a vibrant artistic experience between exhibition, workshop, and science forum.

Conclusion: Science Gaming connects board game culture with science communication and cultural education. Those who want to actively, entertainingly, and in direct exchange discover complex topics will find an inspiring meeting place in the Reading Forum of offerta. A visit is especially worthwhile for all who wish to not only absorb knowledge but experience it playfully.
