LOTUS: Valentina Jaffé lets color, space, and material float in Karlsruhe

With the exhibition LOTUS, the Yvonne Hohner Contemporary Gallery presents a multifaceted position of contemporary art. The artist from Mannheim and graduate of the State Academy of Fine Arts Karlsruhe opens her exhibition personally on November 6, 2026, at 7:30 PM. An introduction by Norina Quinte, artistic director of the Berlin art platform ato, accompanies the opening.

Color as a moving, autonomous force

Three groups of works are at the center: Drift, Traces, and Dripping Folds and Melting States. The monotypes from Drift are created with ink and gouache on long-fiber paper. Their transparent layering reminds one of skins, membranes, and flowing color spaces. Here, color is not for representation but acts as an autonomous actor. Each glance rearranges the open picture spaces and invites concentrated contemplation of the works.

Traces: When painting takes over the space

The site-specific installations of the work group Traces transfer monumental brush movements into architecture. Cut-out shapes made of acrylic on long-fiber paper lay over walls and glass areas, following edges and transitions or presenting their own movement against the existing spatial structure. The curation makes visible how painting grows beyond the picture plane and develops an immediate relationship to the exhibition location.

Fragile balance between Plexiglas, ceramics, and collage

Dripping Folds and Melting States combines industrially produced Plexiglas plates and cylinders with painting and organically shaped, unglazed ceramics. The materials encounter each other in precarious configurations: Ceramic shapes rest over edges, lie on tubes, or seem to float over transparent supports. This creates a sensual balance between weight and lightness, solidity and fragility, body and surface.

The lotus as a poetic reference point

The title of the exhibition refers to the special movement of the works. Just as the lotus grows from the ground through the water and unfolds over its surface, Jaffé's works move between different levels, materials, and states. Overlapping, displacements, and fluid transitions shape the aesthetic experience and open a dialogue between painting, collage, sculpture, and installation.

Cultural education in dialogue with the artist

In conjunction with the exhibition, Valentina Jaffé offers collage workshops for small groups of up to ten people. After a guided tour, participants will create their own artwork with leftover materials on Plexiglas. The open workshop takes place on Saturday, November 14, 2026, from 2 PM to 5 PM. Individual appointments for closed groups can be arranged through the gallery.

Finissage with performance

On Sunday, December 6, 2026, a performance by Vivian Schöchlin will add another accent. The freelance performance artist, actress, and director combines acting, dance, and visual art. The focus is on the human body as a relational element between closeness, touch, and materiality.

Conclusion: An art experience between floating and resistance

LOTUS promises an exhibition where color, paper, glass, Plexiglas, ceramics, and architecture connect to open structures. Art enthusiasts will experience a sensitive engagement with materiality, spatial impact, and movement. Those who wish to not only observe contemporary art but experience it physically and intellectually should visit this exhibition live in Karlsruhe.
