When Fire Writes History: Fire and Catastrophe in Karlsruhe
The opening of the exhibition Fire and Catastrophe – Arson and Extinguishing in Baden 1700–1900 invites a profound exploration of the ambiguous power of fire. On Tuesday, November 3, 2026, the Badische Landesbibliothek will open its exhibition in the lecture hall and exhibition room. Admission is free; registration by October 27, 2026, is requested.
Between Cultural Technique and Destructive Power
Fire provides light and warmth, enables technical development, and shapes the history of humanity. At the same time, an uncontrolled blaze transforms houses, villages, and cities into ashes. The exhibition examines this tension using historical books from the 18th and 19th centuries and makes visible how earlier generations interpreted causes of fires, disasters, and protective measures.
Historical Books as Witnesses to a Vulnerable World
Baroque emblem books, chronicles of misfortune, and depictions of significant city fires will be displayed. The exhibits tell stories of negligence, lightning strikes, war, technical unreliability, and arson. At the same time, the presentation shows how societal notions of guilt, punishment, divine providence, and public responsibility changed over time.
From Firefighting Equipment to Fire Protection
A special focus is on the development of firefighting and preventive fire protection. The exhibition leads to the invention of the fire pump, the lightning conductor, and the handheld fire extinguisher, discusses the history of the fire brigade, and presents Baden fire insurance regulations as well as penal laws on arson. This connects the curation of technology history, legal history, and social history into an illustrative panorama.
Between Funeral Sermon and Paulinchen
The historical sources also show how fire was conveyed emotionally and pedagogically. A funeral sermon could interpret a city fire as divine punishment, while Heinrich Hoffmann's Paulinchen warns against playing with matches. Between moral admonition, religious interpretation, and enlightening knowledge dissemination, a multifaceted aesthetic experience is created.
Exhibition Duration and Cultural Education
The exhibition will be on view from November 4, 2026, to March 24, 2027, at the Badische Landesbibliothek. Concurrently, current literature on fire protection, civil protection, and rescue services will be made available for borrowing in a thematic shelf. This expansion of the exhibition by the BLB invites visitors to connect historical perspectives with today's questions of disaster protection.
Conclusion: An Artistic Experience between Fascination and Warning
Fire and Catastrophe offers an extraordinary view of fire as a natural force, technical challenge, societal risk, and cultural symbol. The carefully selected historical books make past fears, inventions, and interpretive patterns immediately palpable. Art and history enthusiasts should visit the exhibition live to experience the visual power, materiality, and spatial impact of the exhibits at the Badische Landesbibliothek.
